THANKS TO YOUR VOTES, ENCOURAGEMENT AND LOVE I HAVE MADE IT TO THE SEMI-FINALS OF THE 6th ANNUAL RAW: NATURAL BORN ARTISTS RAWARDS!
THIS IS THE STORY OF MY JOURNEY THROUGH MY FIRST SPFX SHOWCASE
On October 17th, after 2 1/2 months of preparation, I thrust a piece of my heart, soul, imagination, and passion onto The Belmont's stage as part of RAW: Natural Born Artists Showcase.
RAW invited me into their artist community and event showcase as a make-up artist. The possibility of having an advertising booth, demonstrating live makeup application, or collaborating with one of the fashion designers, were all offered to me as options for the event. Or, they said I could do "whatever I want."
Typically, my make-up clients include brides & fashion shoots, with an editorial edge. That being said, alien creatures are not a part of my day-to-day craft. But, many would admit, that I have a tendency to let my imagination run a little wild. So, I took a chance and decided to bring my creatures to life.
Needless to say, with zero costuming experience, little knowledge of sewing (and no sewing machine), this project became a humbling experience.
For 2 1/2 months, after leaving the salon each day, or dolling up a bridal party, I worked on building headdresses for the creatures living in my head. I pieced together my little aliens from head to toe. My 500 sq ft apartment quickly became a makeshift workshop, covered in feathers & paint, and I became a headdress building, creature creating machine.
Now, most reasonable people, when it comes taking on a foreign project for the 1st time, will say to themselves: "I am not at a professional level yet, so I should probably take it slow as to not make myself lose my mind."
I am not known for being particularly reasonable, so my thoughts are more along the lines of: "I can probably make 4 models into FaceOff (SyFy channel) level creatures in the next 2 months while running my brand new business. It will be a breeze!
I love my job. I love make-up, and hair. I love making a mess, creating things, and making creepy and couture combine into a beautiful beast. However, I also love sleep.
I began losing steam and was frustrated that I had not been capable of producing the level of work I had in my head. But, once and a while the universe sends you that 1 person who saves you from completely losing it. For whatever reason I was delivered that person.
They were my fuel that reignited the fire when it began to dim, who some-how just saw the vision when no one else did, who believed I was capable of great things even when I did not. With love and support, vision and persistence, I built my 4 headdresses and brought forth my ethereal alien beauties.
The day of the show my extraterrestrial enchantresses were nothing short heaven-sent. With enough bumps in the road on day of the show to make even toughest man cry, it would have been easy for my models to lose faith and give-up. Amber Sunshine, Shelby Maggio, Heather Ray & Megan Jones, evolved into my super-natural beings and blew my mind with every hiss at the audience
These ladies truly embodied the awe-inspiring, deviant dream I had in my head.
With help of photographer Lindsey Thorne, my gorgeous models, time and my RAW Showcase experience I plan to evolve my creatures even further!
